When You Get Everything You Thought You Wanted

“There are two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” – Oscar Wilde

We all have things we want it life – sometimes we get it, sometimes we wait. We lament not getting what we want. We think once we do it get it, that will be the key to happiness. And then we get it, and maybe it’s not everything we hoped for. Or maybe it is, but the satisfaction soon fades.

In times like this, we can look to Philippians 4:11-13: “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

We focus on the present. We recognize that it’s normal to have desires, but we can’t let them consume us. We shouldn’t assume that once our wishes come true, all will be right in the world. We must appreciate what we have, what we do, who we are – right now.
