One Decision Can Change Everything

August 31, 2024

I’ve thought about this a lot before… one seemingly small decision can change everything.

Recently my friend lent me the book Maybe in Another Life which covers this very topic.

Perhaps you chose between two colleges or two jobs. Maybe you considered one city and moved to another. Or something even smaller, less meaningful – you took the bus instead of walking. You went out with friends instead of ordering pizza at home.

…and you met your future husband. You met your best friend. You avoided an accident.

I don’t think I believe in fate. I believe in choices. Every choice we make leads us to the next part of our life, for better or for worse. I do believe in a God who knows these choices before we make them, but I don’t think we’re predestined for them. That’s the beauty of being human – we have the ability to make choices. We’re not robots where everything is set out for us. And that’s both wonderful and scary at the same time.

That doesn’t mean we need to heavily weigh every minute decision because it could impact the course of our life. It means we should trust our gut and know that maybe one path isn’t always better than another, it’s just a different. We should try to love the life we have because it’s the one we’re given, rather than wondering what’s around the corner or what could have been different.

It also means the opportunity to change our lives could be only one choice away. And so we strive to live for today and embrace whatever may come.
